The Yukon Film Society (YFS) was founded 40 years ago in order to support the appreciation of independent film. YFS has evolved to include facilitating the creation of film and media art as a personal, cultural, and artistic practice by holding filmmaking workshops as part of annual festivals and by supporting production with artist access to video equipment. Since its creation, YFS has moved from a volunteer-run to a professional organization that offers a consistent core program of activities that run independently and in partnership with like-minded organizations.
YFS began the Available Light Film Festival in 2003, which has become a nationally recognized must-attend film festival. ALFF is the largest film festival north of 60, featuring and promoting northern filmmaking, including workshops, panel discussions, one-on-one meetings, and the ALFF Short Film Pitch Event as part of the ALFF Industry Forum.
In 2021, YFS took over the lease for the Yukon Theatre, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. As part of this celebration and YFS’ 40th, there was a nineteen-day festival including local, national, and international cinema from the past seven decades, and live scores to silent movies. Ticket sales for the Yukon Theatre go through Elevent, which helps us connect with our audience and allows us to sell advance tickets, accounting for up to 30% of overall sales. Through Elevent, YFS can provide ticketing services to over 40,000 patrons who enjoy films at the Yukon Theatre.
